French translation and preliminary psychometric evaluation of the Meningioma Quality of Life questionnaire (MQOL-FR)

• Prospective translation of the meningioma MQOL into French (MQOL-FR). • MQOL-FR total score shows high internal consistency and excellent test-retest. • Total score test-retest reliability is excellent (ICC = 0.93, 95% CI 0.71-0.98). • MQOL-FR correlates strongly with FACT-Br and moderately with EQ-5D. • Subscales show variable reliability, suggesting refinement of some domains. Disease-specific instruments to assess quality of life in meningioma patients are scarce, and no validated French meningioma-specific questionnaire is available. We translated the Meningioma Quality of Life questionnaire (MQOL) into French (MQOL-FR) and performed a preliminary psychometric evaluation focused on the total score. In this prospective study of adults with meningioma, MQOL was translated using the EORTC forward-backward procedure with expert-panel reconciliation. Patients completed MQOL-FR, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Brain (FACT-Br), and EQ-5D. Internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha), test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and convergent validity (Pearson correlations) were assessed using available complete data for each score. Of 56 invited patients, 37 completed at least part of MQOL-FR. Across subscales, 32-36 patients contributed to internal consistency analyses, and 26 provided complete data for the MQOL total score (all scorable items completed; item 69 “non applicable/non-scored”). Cronbach’s alpha for the total score was 0.88 (95%CI 0.75-0.95). Several subscales (symptoms, emotional, anxiety, functional well-being) showed acceptable reliability, whereas others (vitality, family, social, physical) were less robust. Thirteen patients completed the questionnaire twice; nine had complete paired total-score data. Test-retest reliability for the total score was excellent (ICC 0.93, 95%CI 0.71-0.98). Measurement error indices were SEM 3.8 points and MDC95 10.6 points (0-100 scale). The MQOL total score correlated strongly with the FACT-Br total score (r = 0.84). MQOL-FR showed good internal consistency and excellent test-retest reliability for the total score, with encouraging convergent validity in this cohort. Subscale-level findings should be considered exploratory. Larger multicenter studies are needed to refine subscale performance, evaluate responsiveness to clinical change, and support broader validation in more representative samples. Les outils spécifiques d’évaluation de la qualité de vie chez les patients atteints de méningiome sont rares, et aucun questionnaire méningiome-spécifique validé en français n’est disponible. Nous avons produit une traduction française du Meningioma Quality of Life questionnaire (MQOL) (MQOL-FR) et réalisé une évaluation psychométrique préliminaire, centrée sur le score total. Étude prospective chez des adultes atteints de méningiome. Le MQOL a été traduit de l’anglais vers le français selon la procédure EORTC de traduction-rétrotraduction, avec réconciliation par un panel d’experts. Les patients ont complété le MQOL-FR, le Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), le Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Brain (FACT-Br) et l’EuroQol 5 dimensions (EQ-5D). La cohérence interne (alpha de Cronbach), la fiabilité test-retest (ICC) et la validité convergente (corrélations de Pearson) ont été évaluées à partir des données complètes disponibles pour chaque score. Sur 56 patients invités, 37 ont complété au moins une partie du MQOL-FR. Vingt-six patients avaient des données complètes pour le score total (item 69 non scoré). L’alpha de Cronbach du score total était de 0,88 (IC95% 0,75-0,95). Treize patients ont répondu à deux reprises ; neuf disposaient de paires complètes pour le score total et ont été inclus : la fiabilité test-retest était excellente (ICC 0,93 ; IC95% 0,71-0,98). Les indices d’erreur de mesure étaient SEM 3,8 points et MDC95 10,6 points (échelle 0-100). Le score total du MQOL corrélait fortement avec le FACT-Br total (r = 0,84), soutenant la validité convergente. Le MQOL-FR présente une bonne cohérence interne et une excellente fiabilité test-retest pour le score total, avec une validité convergente encourageante. Les résultats par sous-échelle restent exploratoires ; des études multicentriques de plus grande ampleur sont nécessaires pour affiner les sous-échelles et évaluer la sensibilité au changement clinique.
