Philosophy has repeatedly mistaken settled forms for original truths. It has taken what had already stood there long enough to be named, clarified, described and handled and then called that structure, essence, being or ground. I reject that order. The deeper pressure is not first what is there, but how anything goes on at all. What goes on does not go on whole. It goes on under pressure. It goes on through rooms, stories, objects, files, portraits, habits and the living bodies that still carry them. Ontology arrives late to this. The question arrives late to this. Ground arrives late to this. Reflection names the mistake by which a returned image is taken for floor, truth or direction. Refraction names the splitting of one life into differently weighted continuations as it passes through media, rooms, relations and deaths. What cannot go on whole goes on otherwise. The coat, the portrait, the family story, the room, the question, the chart. These are second bodies. They are not added after innocence. They are among the bodies in which life proceeds there at all. The settled is not the lie. The lie begins when the settled is mistaken for the whole truth of the ongoing. The issue is not how to recover purity. The issue is how to go on without worshipping the settled body that happened to stand there first.
