This review evaluates advancements in flame-retardant polycarbonate, addressing challenges posed by PFAS bans.
This review focuses on the recent advancements in the development of UL‐94 V‐0 rated fire‐retardant polycarbonate (PC) composites in response to global restrictions on per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). It systematically evaluates the current state of research, highlighting key strategies to enhance flame retardancy without compromising other critical properties, including mechanical strength, transparency, and environmental compatibility. By analyzing recent literatures, this review identifies emerging trends in material formulation, processing techniques, and performance evaluations. Particular attention is given to flame retardancy efficiency, smoke and heat release behaviors, thermal decomposition characteristics, optical clarity, and mechanical properties, including ductility, impact toughness, and mechanical strength. Finally, innovative insights are provided for the molecular design and functional integration of PFAS‐free flame‐retardant systems for high‐performance PCs.
