In this article the author analyzes the provisions of normative international acts on a legitimate military target, their practical implementation in the doctrines of the armed forces of various countries, as well as academic approaches to determining the criteria for this concept. In the context of modern conflicts of an international and interethnic nature, as well as the development of technologies and methods of destroying military forces and civilians, the definition of targets subject to legal destruction is fundamental in the context of humanitarian law, which makes this topic relevant for study. Within the framework of this article, the author identifies doctrinal features of a legitimate military goal, which complement the normative approach to the definition of this concept.
