OCT and an artificial bee colony algorithm estimate skin viscoelastic properties during dynamic suction testing.
Why the study?
Photoaging leads to wrinkles by altering skin viscoelasticity through loss or damage of collagen and elastin, motivating methods to detect these viscoelastic changes.
This study presents a method to estimate skin viscoelasticity using OCT and the artificial bee colony algorithm to detect changes associated with photoaging.
Photoaging, caused by aging and UV exposure, leads to wrinkles by altering the skin's viscoelasticity due to the loss or damage of collagen and elastin. This study aims to detect such viscoelastic changes in the skin using optical coherence tomography (OCT) during dynamic suction testing. Internal skin deformation and tissue displacement are visualized, and the viscoelastic properties are estimated using the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm with a one-dimensional finite element skin model. The accuracy of the estimation is then assessed.
