Numerical simulation reveals turbulence suppression in flow through a channel with flexible walls, suggesting innovative material applications.
In this study, numerical simulations of flow fields in a rectangular channel were performed to clarify the mechanism of turbulence reduction by pressure permeation material wall. Moving wall were set up to simulate the flexibility of the pressure permeation material installed on the side walls. Numerical results show that moving conditions caused that the mean flow velocity increased, the velocity fluctuation intensity and Reynolds stress decreased, and turbulence suppresed, compared to the case of fixed wall. Wall moving conditions causing turbulence suppression were 2D expansion wall condition, 3D expansion wall condition, low frequency 2D expansion wall condition, low frequency 3D expansion wall condition and 3D expansion wall condition with long expansion perpendicular to flow direction.
