Perspective reviews advancements in underground dark matter experiments, suggesting improvements for future detector sensitivity.
Dark matter constitutes approximately 85% of the universe’s total mass, yet its nature remains a mystery. Beyond its gravitational effects, little is known about its fundamental properties. Various technologies sensitive to different types of dark matter particles have been developed to explore the vast parameter space and cross-check each other’s results. In this perspective, we review the progress of past and current dark matter experiments in underground laboratories and discuss the improvements needed for future detectors and their sensitivity prospects. The authors review advancements in underground dark matter experiments, highlighting the need for enhanced detector sensitivity to unravel dark matter’s fundamental properties, with implications for astrophysics and cosmology.
