“Jan Seva hi Prabhu Seva (Service to mankind is a service to God)” — Swami Vivekananda. In January 2026, we lost a stalwart scientist of Ayurveda, who was an elite scholar, a revered teacher, an expert in pharmaceutical manufacturing, a visionary administrator, and also a grounded social worker – Raj Vaidya Shri Hirubhai Kuberbhai Patel. The twentieth century marked a transformative period for Ayurveda in India, characterized by institutionalization, academic formalization, and pharmaceutical standardization. Gujarat emerged as a major center of this renaissance, producing eminent Vaidyas who bridged classical knowledge with modern organizational frameworks. Among these luminaries, Vd. Hirubhai Patel holds a place of enduring significance for his tireless contributions to education, pharmaceutical advancement, institutional leadership, and community service. Vd. Hirubhai Patel (March 03, 1936 -January 06, 2026), a radiant torchbearer of Ayurveda who dedicated his entire life to Ayurveda and selfless social service, has naturally left countless hearts heavy and eyes moist with grief by his heavenly departure at the age of 90 years. A lifelong embodiment of altruism, service, and compassion, his departure marks the loss of a truly extraordinary human being. He exemplified purposeful living for both present and future generations through his own conduct. His humanity remains worthy of reverence and emulation. Vd. Hirubhai Patel’s demise has caused an irreparable loss not only to the world of Ayurveda but also to academic, social, and humanitarian domains. His work contributed significantly to the development of Ayurveda education, standardization of classical medicines, and professional leadership across India, particularly in Gujarat. Vd. Hirubhai Patel dedicated 62 years of his life for the service of humanity through Ayurveda by its preservation, promotion, and global propagation. Throughout his life, he remained as a role model projecting a profound personality with integrity to his own life principles and public service through well motivated mindset, clinical insights, and ethical practices of social welfare. He set a benchmark in public service by demonstrating how a down-to-earth life and strong willpower can translate scientific knowledge into public welfare and community health. EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION Born on March 03, 1936 (Indian calendar date: Phalgun Shukla Dwadashi, Vikram Sawant 1993 Sarvadhari) in Gada village, Kheda district, Vaidya ji was deeply influenced by Gandhian principles, an influence that can be traced back to his father, Shri Kuberbhai Patel. The spiritual guidance and association of revered saints such as Pujya Shri Ravishankar Maharaj, Pujya Shri Mota, Pujya Thakkar Bapa, Shri Aurobindo, and the family environment further strengthened his ethical values.1,2 These early influences profoundly shaped his upbringing and education, laying a strong foundation for his future contributions to Ayurveda. Vaidya Ji’s interests were diverse, including the survey of medicinal plants, pharmaceutical research, health talks, and lectures on Ayurveda via television and radio. He earned his D. A. V. (Diploma of Ayurved Visharad) in December 1959 from Sheth J. P. Ayurveda College, Bhavnagar, Gujarat, and H. P. A. (High Proficiency in Ayurveda) in June 1962 from Post Graduate Teaching Centre of Ayurveda (PGTCA), Jamnagar, Gujarat. Under the guidance of eminent Gurus such as Vaidya Prajaram Raval, Vaidya Jugatram Dave, Vaidya Bapalal, and Vaidya Rasiklal Parikh, he acquired profound mastery over Ayurveda. Vaidya Prajaram Raval Ji was a disciple of Raj Vaidya Prabhashankar Bhatt of Gadhada, a lineage that speaks of the depth of knowledge and tradition passed down to Vd. Hirubhai Patel. He further nurtured his skills under the tutelage of eminent scholars such as Vaidya Bhaskar Vinayak Gokhale, Vaidya D. T. Giri, Acharya Shri Vishwanath Dwivedi, Vaidya Shivacharan Dhyani, etc., at PGTCA (renamed later as Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar, and currently designated as Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda). PROFESSIONAL CAREER Vd. Hirubhai Patel emerged from the strong tradition of Gujarat Ayurveda, where lineage-based learning coexisted with institutional education. Patel Ayurveda Hospital, Nadiad, transforming the institution into one of India’s leading centers of Ayurveda education Figure 1. Under his leadership, outstanding faculty appointments, international academic programs, and unprecedented growth in research and clinical facilities were achieved. During his tenure, J. S. Ayurveda College expanded its teaching faculty strength to nearly 30 members, despite a modest annual student intake of only 35. Notably, it was among the few institutions of that period to have sanctioned professorial positions. The institute continues to set an exceptional and outstanding benchmark in the field of Ayurveda, along with a well-equipped multispecialty Ayurveda hospital.Figure 1: Student Union (1979–1980 Batch)He served as a Senate Member of Gujarat Ayurved University for 17 years and as a Syndicate Member for three terms. The company was founded with the objective of providing high-quality Ayurveda medicines to the general public at affordable prices, and under the stewardship of Raj Vaidya Hirubhai Patel, the pharmacy achieved remarkable growth and earned a widespread reputation.5 From a modest inception, the institution has progressively evolved and now stands as a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, certified under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), a dedicated plant for the production of herbo-mineral Ayurvedic formulations with rigorously validated quality standards and scientifically established parameters. WHY RAJ VAIDYA? In the middle age era, the scholars of the Indian system of knowledge were awarded with several titles according to their proficiency of practicing sciences and application of their knowledge, namely Vaidya, Raj Vaidya, Kaviraj, Pandit, Acharya, etc. According to an Ayurvedic Subhashita: “Shatamari Bhavet Vaidya, Sahastramari Bhavet Raj Vaidya” which verbally means that the one who has treated hundreds of critical cases becomes Vaidya and the one who has treated thousands becomes Raj Vaidya. Patel’s expertise and dedication earned him the prestigious title of “Raj Vaidya,” an honor bestowed upon his clinical excellence and lifesaving skills. In Sanskrit, the term “Raj Vaidya” denotes a “Royal Physician,” referring to a medical practitioner formally appointed to provide healthcare services to members of a royal family. Among his thousands of patients, prominent statesmen like the former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Babubhai J. Patel, and former Union Petroleum Minister, Dinsha Patel, were under his expert consultation, solidifying his reputation as a master in Ayurveda medicine. Vd. Hirubhai Patel’s life work illustrates a balanced integration of education, leadership, and pharmaceutical service in Ayurveda. His efforts contributed to the professionalization of Ayurveda while retaining fidelity to classical principles. At a time when traditional medicine faced epistemological and institutional challenges, his work ensured continuity, credibility, and community trust. Vaidya Ji remains an influential figure in the modern history of Ayurveda. His selfless service, ethical integrity, and unwavering commitment to Ayurveda and societal welfare - particularly toward grassroots workers and rural and tribal communities - have established a lasting benchmark in community-oriented healthcare service. We offer our heartfelt homage to the unparalleled contributions of Raj Vaidya Shri Hirubhai Patel. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of Ayurveda practitioners and scholars, ensuring that the rich tradition of Ayurveda continues to thrive for years to come. and of interest are of
