• PV panel–DC/DC Boost converter–inverter–DC motor system. • PV panel used as system’s primary power source. • First-order alternative model used for the DC/DC Boost converter. • Hierarchical flatness-based speed control for bidirectional tracking. • Control validation when load and power supply disturbances are present. A hierarchical control scheme is developed in this work for the bidirectional angular velocity tracking task in a “PV panel–DC/DC Boost converter–inverter–DC motor” system, employing a first-order alternative model of the DC/DC Boost converter. By leveraging the differential flatness property of the system, the proposed controller ensures precise and robust angular velocity tracking. The control strategy is validated for nominal system parameters through simulations and real-time experiments conducted using MATLAB/Simulink and the dSPACE MicrolabBox, respectively. The results demonstrate satisfactory closed-loop performance, specifically achieving precise tracking of the measured outputs (Boost converter voltage and motor shaft angular velocity), and confirm the controller’s robustness against abrupt changes in both the Boost converter and the PV panel power supply. Furthermore, a comparative closed-loop performance evaluation against a passive control strategy and a flatness-based control strategy is provided, further highlighting the improved performance of the proposed approach.
