This article examines misconceptions in electrochemistry terminology and principles, suggesting clearer definitions for better understanding.
Most textbooks of chemistry at the freshman level do not follow the definitions or terminology recommended by the IUPAC. There is also a tendency to assume that some principles should be obvious to students from a study of physics. Studies of misconceptions in electrochemistry suggest that the above assumption is unwarranted. This article examines misconceptions that arise from deviations from the IUPAC recommendations and discusses some other misconceptions in terms of “potential profile” diagrams.
