Research demonstrates increased bacterial reduction in root canals using mini electrodes and medicaments, suggesting improved disinfection methods.
Objectives: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a microelectronic electrode-based device to enhance bacterial biofilm elimination from root canals as an adjunct to conventional intracanal medicaments. Methods: Miniaturized electrodes were designed for placement within prepared root canals. Electrochemical exposure was delivered to disrupt bacterial membrane potential and destabilize biofilm structure. Bacterial load reduction was evaluated at baseline, during electrochemical application, and post-treatment. Results: The combined use of mini electrodes with standard intracanal medicaments resulted in significantly greater bacterial reduction compared to medicaments alone, demonstrating enhanced antimicrobial effectiveness against resistant biofilms. Conclusions: The electrochemical mini electrode system shows promising potential as an adjunctive approach for improving root canal disinfection and reducing reinfection risk. Further clinical validation is warranted.
