Obituary celebrates Millie Dresselhaus, a pioneer for women in physics, indicating her enduring influence.
In 1985 Mildred (“Millie”) S. Dresselhaus became the first woman Institute Professor at MIT and in 1990 the first woman to receive the U.S. National Medal of Science in Engineering. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014. She worked indefatigably to make physics more welcoming to female scientists and helped to create a system for women physicists to visit campuses and meet graduate and undergraduate students. She also persuaded research institutions to improve living accommodations for women and remove discrimination from admission processes.
