Comparative evaluation shows differences in dentinal microcrack formation among endodontic file systems, indicating implications for clinical practice.
Objectives: To compare dentinal microcrack formation following root canal instrumentation using ProTaper Gold, Twisted File Adaptive, and Blue NiTi EndoArch systems employing micro-computed tomography. Methods: Forty-five extracted human mandibular molars with separate mesial canals were decoronated and randomly allocated into three groups (n=15 each): ProTaper Gold (25/0.08), Twisted File Adaptive (25/0.06), and Blue NiTi EndoArch (30/0.04). Canals were prepared following manufacturers’ protocols. Samples were scanned pre- and post-instrumentation using micro-CT at 14 µm resolution. Cross-sectional images from coronal, middle, and apical thirds were evaluated by blinded observers for the presence of newly formed dentinal microcracks. Results: The quantitative analysis of dentinal microcrack formation is currently underway. Preliminary observations indicate variation in crack distribution patterns across different file systems. Conclusions: Micro-CT evaluation provides a reliable non-destructive method for assessing instrumentation-induced dentinal defects. The comparative findings are expected to assist clinicians in selecting safer instrumentation systems.
