This course introduces chemistry concepts through analysis of science fiction in an imaginative context.
Few students majoring in such fields as cinema art and science, fiction writing, television, music, dance, etc., take science courses that are rigorous and yet present content in imaginative ways. At Columbia College - Chicago, students receive such an introduction to chemistry and scientific concepts through the practices of reading/analysis of short stories and viewing/analysis of video “clips” featuring chemistry-based science fiction. In addition to other standard classroom methods of evaluation, students complete a final course project to illustrate select chemistry concepts learned. This is accomplished in the course The Chemistry of Science Fiction.
