Ion chromatography is employed in the analysis of commercial samples of drinking water. In this laboratory experiment, third-semester chemistry and science students expand their understanding of the qualitative- and quantitative-analysis concepts introduced during the first-year general chemistry course sequence. The experiment is of interest to students because of its direct relevance to their lives and to the environment. Furthermore, it provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in current analytical methods and on state-of-the-art-instruments.
