Describes a universal parser designed to implement arithmetic calculations, suggesting broad programming applications.
This paper describes the structure of a simple universal parser based on the use of functional programming. The described parser is very simple, small in size and can be easily implemented in almost any functional or object oriented programming language. The initial version of the parser was written in Haskell and then easily ported to C++ and Java. The parser was used to implement a calculator with support for five arithmetic operations (taking into account their precedence), brackets, numeric constants (like π and e) and calls to standard functions (trigonometric, exponent, logarithm and some others).
