Serafim Zakharovich was born on February 2, 1936, to the family of rural teacher Zakhar Timofeyevich Piskunov and rural nurse Maria Afanasyevna Piskunova in a house-school—a former parish school where his paternal grandfather, Afanasy Petrovich Gubanov, had worked as a teacher before the revolution. The teacher’s family lived in one half of the house; the other half served as a primary school classroom, where his aunt, Anna Afanasyevna Malysheva, taught. Next to the school was a large garden planted by Seraphim Zakharovich’s grandfather, a cemetery, and the ruins of the Church of the Nativity of Christ, which was demolished in 1936. Seraphim Zakharovich spent his childhood in this garden.
