Taxonomic work describes a new bivalve genus, Mazaevella, from European deposits, suggesting novel insights into biodiversity.
A new genus of the family Annuliconchidae, Mazaevella gen. nov, is described from the Gzhelian-Sakmarian deposits of the Cisuralia, Western Urals and Pechora Basin. The new genus differs from other genera of the family by the dominance of radial sculpture in the spaces between comarginal ridges. A redescription of the type species M. placunensis (Koschman in Nelsina, 1958), comb. nov. is carried out, for which a lectotype is assigned and stratigraphic references of the finds are specified. Representatives of Mazaevella gen. nov. are known only from reef facies and are endemic to the Paleo-Ural Strait.
