This research analyzes shape design for a mobile marine buoy, demonstrating improved performance with an asymmetric configuration.
The design of the overall shape and hydrodynamic performance of a mobile marine acoustic buoy was investigated. Several typical disc-shaped buoy prototypes, featuring both asymmetric and symmetric upper and lower discs, were analyzed to integrate a fairing that achieves the disc-shaped configuration with minimal resistance. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were employed for this purpose. Through the analysis and comparison of six primary configurations, a relatively optimal main line type was identified. The simulation experiments demonstrated that the buoy exhibits the highest lift-to-drag ratio in the asymmetric line type; furthermore, this new asymmetric design shows enhanced hydrodynamic performance when compared to the classic symmetric prototype. This research contributes to shortening the development cycle of gliding seismic instrument buoys while reducing design costs, thereby providing robust technical guidance and reference for improved designs in future endeavors. • A disc-shaped structure with upper-lower asymmetry is obtained. • The shape offers a high lift-drag ratio, low pitching moment, low upward resistance. • A Multi-Objective shape optimization method based on Isight. • It benefits shape optimization of other disc-like deep-sea equipment.
