Bioinspired ZnO nanoparticles inhibit α-glucosidase and provide antioxidant benefits, suggesting potential therapeutic use for diabetes management.
aims: Bioinspired ZnO Nanoparticles from Allium cepa Peel for α-Glucosidase Inhibition and Antioxidant Therapy background: According to the 2021 IDF report, approximately 537 million people worldwide are affected by diabetes. One major contributing factor is the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles. Antidiabetic and antioxidant agents play a crucial role in managing this condition and enhancing overall well-being. Zinc oxide (ZnO) possesses the ability to combat oxidative stress and enhance glucose metabolism, which has attracted considerable interest in research. objective: Bioinspired ZnO Nanoparticles from Allium cepa Peel for α-Glucosidase Inhibition and Antioxidant Therapy method: To improve the effectiveness of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnONPs), we have incorporated Allium cepa (onion) peel extract in their synthesis. Initially, the phytoconstituents of the hydroalcoholic extract were analysed using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS), followed by molecular docking studies to explore the relationship between these compounds and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The Allium cepa peel extract-ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were then synthesized and evaluated through inhibition assays targeting α-glucosidase enzymes and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. result: The results indicated that the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles exhibited a hexagonal crystalline structure, with a 17.93 nm of particle size and and an absorption band at 365 nm. These nanoparticles exhibited significant α-glucosidase inhibition, with rates of 25.38% and 82.11%, as well as antioxidant activity up to 64.59%. conclusion: These findings suggest that Allium cepaZnONPs have potential to exhibit promoting antioxidant and antidiabetic benefits. other: NA
