Discusses the Netherlands' involvement in UN peacekeeping in Mali, revealing significant challenges for future missions.
From 2014 to 2019 The Netherlands deployed troops to the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). It was the first large participation in a UN peacekeeping operation since 2000-2001. This paper discusses the Dutch participation in MINUSMA as part of a more general European return to UN peacekeeping. It is argued that the underwhelming results of MINUSMA, the existence of competing security challenges, and capability constraints form serious obstacles to a new substantial Dutch involvement in a UN peacekeeping mission.
