This presentation explores the latest developments in laws, policies, and initiatives concerning space debris mitigation from an international perspective, focusing on the work of the Legal Subcommittee (LSC) of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS). It provides an overview of recent efforts on international frameworks, including the COPUOS Space Debris Mitigation Guidelines, which recommend measures for minimizing debris creation and enhancing spacecraft design, and the ISO standards for technical debris mitigation practices. Moreover, it examines the specifics of the Zero Debris Charter promoted by the European Space Agency (ESA), which aims at achieving debrisneutral operations by 2030. Several national legislations are examined, using Brazil as an example of integrating international instruments. This presentation also discusses global initiatives and international missions such as ClearSpace-1, as well as ongoing legal and technical challenges, including liability issues, and explores future trends and solutions in space debris mitigation.
