Purpose This study aims to analyze the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on sustainable performance through green intellectual capital components and green innovation. Design/methodology/approach The research presents a conceptual model based on previous studies, validated through structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using data collected from 431 participants. Findings The findings underscore the significant role of AI in enhancing green intellectual capital components, green innovation and sustainable performance. Furthermore, green intellectual capital components and green innovation serve as mediators in the link between AI and sustainable performance. Practical implications The results of this research offer significant insights for managers to develop and enact policies that enhance components of green intellectual capital and green innovation, thereby bolstering sustainable performance. Originality/value To our knowledge, this is the inaugural empirical study investigating the impact of AI on the sustainable performance of SMEs via green intellectual capital components and green innovation in an emerging market such as Vietnam.
