Analysis reveals how insights from Caritas in Veritate address ongoing socio-economic challenges post-COVID-19.
The pandemic COVID-19 havocked the lives of millions of people across the globe. It not only affected people's health but also their social life and economy. Most of the countries registered a steep decline in their gross domestic product. This had a negative effect on business and trade. It also increased unemployment thereby pushing millions to utter poverty.Even though the world is crawling out of the pandemic, its negative effects continue to bring misery and sufferings in people's lives.Apart from building a robust healthcare infrastructure the world community needs to work towards reviving the economy and focus on social problems, which are hurting people.Way back in 2008, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in his encyclical Caritas in veritate (CV) addressed the various problems because of the consequences of the global economic meltdown.Even though Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI noted he is not offering any technical solutions to tame the economic crisis, his encyclical CV could certainly give some deep insights to address the root causes of the socio-economic and political difficulties arising because of the pandemic COVID-19.In this paper, I will examine how these insights could help the world community to face the various challenges posed by the pandemic COVID-19.The main resources for this paper are the encyclical CV, the social teachings of the Catholic Church and the opinions of experts in these fields.
