Case report reveals conservative management of adult megacystis–megaureter, highlighting diagnostic challenges.
Introduction: Megacystis–megaureter is a rare condition referring to chronic dilatation of the ureter in the absence of identifiable organic obstruction. It is rare in adulthood. Case presentation: We report a rare case of megacystis–megaureter presenting for the first time in adulthood. The patient exhibited symptoms of obstructive uropathy, with preserved renal function following decompression. The patient was managed conservatively. Case discussion: Intravenous pyelogram and radioisotope renography are helpful for diagnosing megacystis megaureter. Voiding cystourethrogram, Renal scintigraphy, Doppler study and pressure flow study can differentiate between obstructive and non-obstructive types. Treatment of urinary tract infection, temporary urinary diversion to optimize the renal function, bladder training are the mainstay of treatment. Conclusion: Megacystis megaureter poses diagnostic and management dilemma. The report underscores the potential role of conservative management. Further research is necessary to establish management protocols.
