This research demonstrates a method to introduce trifluoroethylthio groups in organic compounds, suggesting new synthetic pathways.
Methods for the direct 1,1,2-trifluoroethylation of molecules via oxidative or visible light photoredox radical generating processes are rare, as is chemistry for electrophilic 1,1,2-trifluoroethylthiolaton. Here, we report the preparation of a benchtop stable reagent, sodium 1,1,2-trifluoroethanesulphinate, that functions to introduce such groups into a broad variety of electron deficient and electron rich heteroaromatic and unactivated alkene systems, using oxidative processes to generate the 1,1,2-trifluoroethyl radical and the reagent PCl₃ to introduce the 1,1,2-trifluoroethylthio group.
