Investigates the toxic effects of Catharanthus roseus extract on liver and testicular structures in male albino mice, suggesting potential risks of its use.
This study investigated the effects of C. roseus leaf extract on the histopathological structure of the liver and testes in male albino mice in order to assess its toxicological profile. Adult male mice were administered high and low doses of aqueous leaf extract of C. roseus for 14, 28 and 35 days. This oral administration can lead to significant structural alterations. The liver is particularly vulnerable to the alkaloids in C. roseus, and the toxic effects typically manifest in a manner that depends on the dosage. The hepatic analysis showed significant disruption of the liver's structure, which was manifested by the death of hepatocytes and the presence of inflammatory cell infiltration. Testicular examination showed widespread necrosis, hyalinization of tubules. C. roseus has notable medicinal properties, but its extract can cause hepatotoxicity and testicular injury that varies with the dose.
