Key Points

  • The research aims to improve understanding of nutrition claims and their appropriate use in food substitutions for weight management.
  • Analyzed food choice motives and nutrition claims in Brazil.
  • Conducted surveys to assess perceptions of healthiness.
  • Evaluated intentions to substitute conventional foods with alternatives.
  • Findings indicate a lack of clarity about nutrition claims among consumers.
  • Substitution intentions for claimed foods varied based on perceived healthiness.
  • Calls for stricter regulations to ensure nutrition claims do not mislead consumers.

Abstract

These findings highlight the urgent need to improve public understanding of what NC actually mean and in which dietary contexts substituting conventional foods with claimed alternatives is appropriate. They also reinforce the importance of stricter regulation of NC on ultra-processed foods, so that these messages do not undermine healthy eating and weight-management efforts.
