This framework proposes new mechanisms for knowledge management in AI systems, suggesting innovative applications beyond technology.
Contemporary AI systems store knowledge in architectures designed for accounting — relational databases, vector stores, key-value pairs. None of these learn, forget, or associate. PHYSARUM is a bio-inspired framework modeled after the slime mold Physarum polycephalum, proposing eight mechanisms mapped from biology to computation: adaptive path reinforcement (Shuttle Streaming), curiosity as a measurable graph state, emotion as prioritization, intrinsic ethics as architecture, self-organizing networks (Chemotaxis), knowledge transfer through fusion (Plasmodial Fusion), dormancy (Sclerotium), and autonomous agent creation (True Sporulation). The framework extends beyond AI to organizational design and product development. This document defines the conceptual foundation — the what and why — leaving the how open for community contribution.
