Compilation of rust taxa in the Korean Peninsula reveals nomenclature corrections, indicating important biodiversity insights.
This study aimed at examining rust taxa reported in the Korean Peninsula and compiling them with correction of their taxonomic designation and nomenclature in accordance with currently accepted classification and nomenclature of rust fungi. The compilation of rust taxa recognized by unified application of taxon circumscription and nomenclature is very basic for the accurate comparison of rust floras among northeastern continental Asia, the Korean Peninsula, and the Japanese Archipelago. The accurate comparison further provides the basis for the analysis and interpretion of the origin, maintenance, development, and decline of rust fungus diversity in eastern Asia.In total, this study recognized 263 species and 5 varieties in 30 genera, 11 families.Fifteen species were recognized in two anamorphic genera. This paper, the first of the tripartite papers, reports 78 species in 16 genera, 6 families.
