Fieldwork is a fundamental component of forensic science programmes in Higher Education, particularly in forensic anthropology and forensic archaeology where human remains are frequently recovered in outdoor settings. Access to outdoor teaching facilities can represent a major barrier to learning due to limited resources, cost, student mobility and health and safety requirements. This study aims to create a high-quality and inclusive digital learning resources to supplement existing teaching materials and practices within the field of forensic anthropology. This article details the design, creation processes, and implementation of an immersive digital resource as part of a second-year forensic anthropology and taphonomy module undertaken as part of a general undergraduate forensic science programme. Learners can navigate through numerous virtual locations, and engage with forensic items of interest, the discovery and subsequent excavation of a simulated clandestine burial. Supported by subsequent analysis of remains in laboratory work, this resource forms part of an authentic assessment. Whilst it does not provide students with the same learning experiences as actual fieldwork, initial observations suggest that there is no detriment in using digital resources as a tool for delivering supplementary information, and student feedback was found to be positive.
