In view of the demand for synthesizing newer and sustainable materials for efficient and single step sequestration of total arsenic from aqueous medium, a novel nanocomposite of waste iron junk derived goethite with uniform shaped α-MnO2 particles has been synthesized in the present work. The synchronization of goethite and α-MnO2 provides a single platform for addressing the issue. The performance of the material is investigated by systematic batch experimentation techniques. Alongside, interaction mechanism of arsenic species at solid-liquid interface was supported by mathematical modelling study and analytical instrumentation study. The material shows excellent affinity for both the arsenic species (As(III): 66.19 mg g− 1 and As(V): 121.20 mg g− 1) under circum-neutral pH range (0.2 g L− 1 of material is enough to remove > 80% of 0.25 mg L− 1 arsenic within 20 min). The study further shows a new direction of waste management by utilizing iron junk for sustainable remediation of groundwater contaminants.
