Explores Beclin 1 and Bcl-2's impact on tumor progression in renal cell carcinoma, indicating potential implications for prognosis.
Background Autophagy is a homeostatic process that plays a role in the initiation and progression of different types of human cancers. This study aimed to explore the significance of Beclin 1 and Bcl-2 expression in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Patients and methods This study was carried out on 79 RCC tissue samples for the evaluation of immunohistochemical expression of Beclin 1 and Bcl-2. Results Normal kidney tissue adjacent to the tumor showed weak to no Beclin 1 expression. High Beclin 1 was in favor of multifocal tumor presentation ( P =0.001) and papillary type RCC ( P =0.005). None of the adjacent normal renal tissue showed Bcl-2 staining. Bcl-2 was not associated with the studied clinicopathologic factors. Both Beclin 1 and Bcl-2 were not correlated with overall survival. Beclin 1 appeared to be negatively associated with Bcl-2 expression in RCC ( P =0.004). Conclusion It seems reasonable to assume that Beclin 1 may play a role in RCC tumorigenesis. High Beclin 1 level is an unfavorable prognostic factor of RCC being linked with aggressive histopathologic parameters.
