Coal mining in India has initiated the process of urbanization in sparsely populated interior regions. Most of these colliery towns are mono-functional and still insignificant in population size; on the contrary, Chirimiri has evolved into a relatively populous multi-functional town over the years. Henceforth, analyzing the trends and characteristics of the town's population may reveal its evolutionary processes. The study analyzes the distribution of population traits (characteristics) in the town. The study sheds light on the causes and consequences associated with the process of de-urbanization of the town.
