Why the study?
Bioprosthetic heart valves are susceptible to structural valve degeneration, and 25% of reoperations for structural valve degeneration occur with minimal leaflet mineralization rather than calcification.
This review highlights the importance of noncalcific mechanisms, such as protein infiltration, glycation, oxidative/mechanical stress, and inflammation, in the structural degeneration of bioprosthetic heart valves.
