The female of the polygamous spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus L., possesses the gular‐prosternal type of stridulatory apparatus with 9–10 ridges, whereas the male lacks such ridges. There is a much less developed pars stridens than in other Ips species possessing this type of stridulatory apparatus. The female is attracted to male frass and responds to male attraction at the gallery entry with a multi‐pulse chirp and a series of double clicks, whereas during stress situations both female and male produce a single‐pulse click or a series of such clicks. It is therefore believed that chemoacoustic interaction plays a role in the colonization behavior of this species.
