Field studies performed in Norway spruce forests near Třeboň, Bohemia and Hronec, Slovakia in May and June, 1970 showed that the male beetle of Ips typographus L., after entering the host, produces a pheromone which attracts en masse both male and female beetles. This is an aggregating pheromone but apparently some mechanism of mating regulation is operative also. The pheromone occurred in both the spring and second flights. The beetles responded also to volatile resinous host substances, especially alpha‐pinene, beta‐pinene, and limonene, in a ratio favoring the male, i. e. the host‐finding sex. Three common predators of I. typographus, namely Thanasimus formicarius L., Medetera signaticornis Lw., and Epuraea pygmaea Gyll., were also attracted by these terpenes and the beetle‐infested logs. The diurnal flight of the beetle was found to be governed by temperature and high light intensity.
