The FDA and NIH have announced new steps to reduce animal use in research. The FDA provided the first guidance for evaluating non-animal alternatives, or new approach methodologies (NAM), for drug pharmacology and toxicology. The NIH is providing more than 150 million for new centers and projects to develop and implement additional NAMs. But cancer researchers say that alternative approaches aren't ready to replace animal models.
