This review summarizes hydrogen sulphide's role in regulating plant growth and stress responses, suggesting implications for plant health.
Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) is a gaseous signalling molecule that plays an active role in plant growth and stress responses. In this review, we summarise the synthesis and metabolism of H₂S, recent progress in H₂S research on stress and plant growth, and discuss the modes of action of H₂S. Many studies have demonstrated that H₂S exhibits a hormetic effect, that suitable concentrations of H₂S actively regulate the development of various species through a conserved mechanism. H₂S affects multiple growth stages of plants and alleviates oxidative damage, photosynthetic inhibition, and homoeostasis abnormalities in stress responses, primarily through transcriptional and post-translational regulation. In addition, we present unresolved problems and the H₂S applicational significance.
