Patients with symptomatic severe carotid stenosis who experienced a carotid TIA or non-disabling stroke within 4 months before randomisation, and have an atherosclerotic stenosis of the ipsilateral carotid bifurcation of 60% or more (NASCET method) suitable for both carotid surgery and angioplasty.

Intervention

Carotid angioplasty consisting of primary stenting with cerebral protection.

Comparator

Carotid endarterectomy (carotid surgery) performed using standard operative techniques.

Outcome

Composite of (a) any stroke or death within 30 days of the procedure and (b) any stroke or death within 30 days of the procedure plus ipsilateral stroke.composite
