Changes in sizes and morphology of small cavities in nickel irradiated by 20 keV helium ions at 700°C were investigated during irradiation and on annealing after that by means of transmission electron microscopy. During irradiation, the first observable cavities were in the form of spheres, which changed to cubes bounded by {100} planes and finally to cuboctahedra by the growth of {111} facets from cube corners. On annealing at 700°C after an irradiation of medium dose, cubic cavities changed to octahedra, slightly increasing their volumes, and at 775°C they changed to roundish cubes, remarkably increasing their volumes. The morphological changes during and after irradiation were explained by the effect of the internal gas pressure.
