Magnetometry locates archaeological features in Blunsdon, suggesting historical significance.
Detailed magnetometry was carried out using a SENSYS MAGNETO MX V3 6 channel cart-based system. The instrument has 6 fluxgate gradiometers (FGM650) spaced 0.5m apart and approximately 60mm above the ground surface. Readings are recorded at 20Hz which equates to a survey resolution of 0.5m by <0.15m. The south western corner of the site contains the remains of a "Highworth Circle", one of a larger group of circular enclosures within a 6km radius of Highworth that are likely to have been used for medieval stock control. The survey located the ditch associated with the circle, along with evidence for another complete example to the north east, and also partial evidence for three possible further examples to the north. A group of linear ditches and pits have also been located in the south western corner of the site and these appear to relate to features that may pre-date the circle. A small group of anomalies close to the eastern edge within the central part of the site and two linear anomalies in the northern part of the site could also have archaeological potential.
