Project demonstrates an AI-powered writing assistant that improves academic writing quality, suggesting formal language and analyzing arguments.
This project presents an AI-Powered Academic Writing Assistant built as a Microsoft Word Add-in using NLP and Machine Learning. The system addresses the cognitive load academic writers face when managing argument structure and formal tone simultaneously. It integrates directly into Microsoft Word via a real-time sidebar, delivering instant feedback without disrupting the writing workflow. The add-in features an Argument Structure Analyzer that detects weak or unsupported Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning, alongside an Academic Tone Analyzer that identifies informal language and suggests formal alternatives. The technology stack includes React and Office.js for the frontend, Python FastAPI for the backend, OpenAI API for AI reasoning, and spaCy for NLP preprocessing. Compared to existing tools like Grammarly and MS Editor, this system uniquely combines both argument analysis and academic tone correction in one integrated solution. The system is designed to return results within five seconds with no text storage, ensuring performance and privacy. This work was conducted at Arab International University (AIU), Syria.
