Overview

BFR during light-load exercise acutely enhances corticomotor excitability; extends RCT evidence on its neuromodulatory effects.

Structured PICO

Does an acute bout of resistance exercise with blood flow restriction increase corticomotor excitability in males?

P
Population
10 males
I
Intervention
Light-load (20% 1-RM) unilateral elbow flexion exercise with blood flow restriction applied continuously at 80% resting systolic blood pressure (BFR-C) or intermittently at 130% resting systolic blood pressure (BFR-I)
C
Comparator
Heavy-load (80% 1-RM) and light-load (20% 1-RM) unilateral elbow flexion exercise without blood flow restriction
O
Outcome
Corticomotor excitability (motor evoked potential, MEP amplitude) and short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) measured using transcranial magnetic stimulation over a 60 min post-exercise periodsurrogate

Continuous blood flow restriction during light-load resistance exercise significantly increases and prolongs corticomotor excitability compared to traditional resistance exercise.
