Key Points

To contrast the efficacy of the rational compression model against the flexible experiential model in accelerating product innovation.
Empirical analysis evaluating N=72 product development projects across computer hardware and software firms located in Europe, Asia, and the United States.
Assessed project cycle times against experiential tactics (iterations, extensive testing, multifunctional teams, powerful leaders) and compression tactics (supplier involvement, computer-aided design, overlapping development steps).
Experiential tactics—including frequent design iterations, extensive testing, regular milestones, multifunctional teams, and powerful project leaders—significantly accelerate the pace of product development.
Compression strategies, such as supplier integration, computer-aided design, and overlapping stages, only accelerate development pace within mature industry segments.
Formal advance planning and rewarding teams based on schedule attainment fail to accelerate project timelines.
