Key Points

  • The aim is to investigate buried archaeological remains before proposed development at Kinloss Barracks.
  • Conducted geophysical survey using magnetic gradiometry method.
  • Surveyed an arable field at Kinloss Barracks.
  • Documented agricultural features like field boundaries and drains.
  • Identified anomalies suggesting archaeological features in the southern area.
  • Noted features may include ring ditches, pits, and enclosures from the Iron Age.
  • Data complexities arise from military-related magnetic disturbances.

Abstract

A geophysical survey, using the magnetic gradiometry method, was undertaken on 27 - 28 March 2023 to investigate the potential for buried archaeological remains prior to a proposed development at Kinloss Barracks. The survey area is located approximately 2km N of the central area of Kinloss. The survey area consisted of one arable field that is currently part of the Kinloss Airfield. Agricultural activity has been recorded in the form of former mapped and unmapped field boundaries and drains. Natural variations have been detected which reflect changes in superficial deposits. Anomalies of a possible archaeological origin have been identified in the S of the survey area. These broadly coincide with recorded cropmarks which suggest ring ditches, pits, and square enclosures potentially Iron Age in date. However, the data is confused by magnetic disturbance related to military use of the area and these anomalies could represent an area where aircraft parts were buried after the second world war
