This review highlights the reliable performance of current AICD lead systems and anticipates future developments to reduce procedural morbidity.
Reassures on early ICD lead safety for implantation; leaves open long-term durability, requiring extended surveillance and iterative designs.
T roup PJ: Lead System selection, implantation, and testing for the automatic implantable cardioverter‐defibrillator . Presently available AICD electrode Systems have performed well with little modification since the initial implants. The durability and biocompatibility of the available leads can only be tested with time. No indications of major future problems have yet emerged although a few apparently isolated problems have occurred. New lead configurations for the AICD will evolve, undoubtedly including intravascular catheters and combined intracardiac‐extracardiac lead Systems yielding several additional lead configurations. These new lead designs will permit a more individualized method of AICD implantation and hopefully they will reduce the morbidity of the procedure .
