Descriptive analysis documents historic fabric and development in a former dairy at Crafton Farmhouse, indicating archaeological significance.
Compile descriptions of the structure including details of the surviving historic fabric and any evidence for alterations and sequence of development, paying particular attention to the brick floor. Conduct photographic survey to record all external views and general internal shots, with detailed shots taken to record the brick floor surface prior to alteration. Comprised the recording of a 19th century former dairy attached to a well-preserved post-medieval timber-framed house, and included an appraisal of the wider house which is of much archaeological interest. The dairy structure is brick-built and spans a double height space. Small clues are consistent with a dairy or brewhouse use although no specific evidence such as worktops or wall slabs survives. An ephemeral mezzanine was likely present and mortices indicate a high-level attached feature. The brick floor is of several phases and allowed close observation of probable early extruded bricks, with perforations clustered in two lines in the centre. A single purlin retains scribed Baltic timber marks.
