Research identifies new haptens causing allergic reactions in patients exposed to aziridine hardener, suggesting potential risks.
Allergic contact dermatitis caused by contact with an aziridine hardener used in the production of polyurethane plastics was observed in several patients. Two compounds were isolated from the hardener, and their molecular structures were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy. The compounds were shown to be aziridine derivatives of trimethylolpropane triacrylate. Patch testing with the pure substances showed allergic reactions to both compounds. High-performance liquid chromatography methods for analysis of the new compounds and trimethylolpropane triacrylate are described.
