This evaluation reveals wind energy potential in Ethiopia, selecting turbines that optimize energy output.
This study evaluates wind energy potential and selects suitable wind turbines for three sites in Ethiopia: Weraelu, Enewari, and Mekdelamba. Wind speed data from 2013–2017 were analyzed, revealing average speeds of 7.38, 9.12, and 8.03 m/s at 70 m above ground level (AGL), respectively. Turbines were selected based on their compatibility with site‐specific wind characteristics. The Acciona AW‐82/1500 (1.5 MW) turbine was chosen for Weraelu, achieving an annual energy production (AEP) of 4,314,200 kWh and a capacity factor (CF) of 32.83%. For Enewari and Mekdelamba, the Suny SE8220III (2 MW) turbine was selected, achieving AEPs of 7,285,210 kWh (CF: 41.6%) and 6,243,215 kWh (CF: 35.6%), respectively. Blade optimization results showed maximum power coefficients ( C p ) of 44.86% for the Acciona turbine and 47.3% for the Suny turbine. Aerodynamic analysis indicated that the S818 airfoil outperformed NACA 63‐421, achieving a lift‐to‐drag ratio of 38.69 at a 15° angle of attack (AOA), compared to 30.25 for NACA 63‐421. These results confirm the viability of wind energy for Ethiopia’s energy diversification.
